Pot-clinic applicant's dad jailed for drug crimes
Morning Sentinel

A man whose son wants state permission to open four medical marijuana dispensaries is going to jail after pleading guilty to charges of growing and selling pot illegally.

Robert Sirois of Farmington, who was 56 when arrested Sept. 15, was spotted walking into a house in Industry with a large bag full of marijuana.

Agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said they believed he had been harvesting marijuana that was growing in the area. Inside the building, police found 40 pounds of marijuana and 125 plants growing in the basement.

Police said the seized drugs would have been worth $200,000 if sold on the street.

Our View: Medical marijuana fees need a chance to work
Portland Press Herald

Maine voters approved such sweeping changes to the medical marijuana law last year that it should be considered an entirely new program.

Given that, the fee structure created by the Legislature to implement the new law should be given a chance to work before it gets adjusted.

At a hearing this week, some medical marijuana patients made the case that the proposed annual charges -- $100 for a patient, and $300 for a home grower -- are too high.

The patients said that many of them would be hard-pressed to pay that much for the right to buy the drug that they need, even though low-income MaineCare recipients would get a $25 annual discount.

Their testimony was compelling, but anyone who supports medical marijuana distribution has an interest in seeing this program work. And it will not succeed without strict government oversight to protect against diversion.

Registration is necessary to establish who has a right to possess pot in case of an encounter with law enforcement. Without a registry, every person arrested for marijuana possession could claim to have an ailment and try to find an after-the-fact prescription for it.

Montel Williams lights up the Maine Medical Marijuana Conference
By Kim I. Hartman, Digital Journal

Montel Williams spoke at yesterday's medical marijuana conference in Maine. In tears as he shared his pain with the audience, he was encouraged by one attending Sheriff to take his medicine, prompting Montel to light up a joint and take a few puffs.

There have been a number of questions surrounding medical marijuana dispensaries in the state, since the new law was passed in November.

At the convention in Portland nearly 250 people came out to hear the ins and outs of the law, and learn how they can get involved in growing or selling medical marijuana reported wchs6.com.

Television host Montel Williams was the keynote speaker. Suffering from multiple sclerosis, Williams has been an advocate for the uses of marijuana for medical patients.

Williams uses marijuana to help ease symptoms of multiple sclerosis including the chronic nerve pain and said "people like him shouldn't be treated as criminals for using marijuana for pain control for a variety of diseases and conditions."

The conference was held to attempt to answer questions about what the law means for patients, health care providers, municipalities, law enforcement agencies and others.
